A BRILLIANT century from Andrew Gouldthorpe proved to be the difference as Perranarworthal fell to Hayle’s second team in the Cornwall Cricket League.

The batsman scored 115 in the first innings to get his side up to 222-6 off 48 overs, a total which would in the end be far too much for the hosts to reach as they were bowled out for 159 chasing.

Having beaten Hayle fairly comfortably when the two sides previously met this season on May 31, the home team went into the Division Three West mid-table clash with confidence.

When they played each other earlier in the year, Hayle’s batsmen could only muster 100 runs between them before Perranarworthal lost seven wickets in their innings as they just about reached the target.

Opening batsman Gouldthorpe scored seven runs in the first match and this time round felt a point needed to be proved and proved to be a thorn in the side of the hosts.

He would end up bettering his score from May 31 by 108 runs, along with scoring more than his whole team did last time, while middle order batter Jamie Harvey also hit a half century.

Philip Rees was the pick of Perranarworthal’s bowlers ending the innings with figures of three for 34 while Christophers Yeomans also grabbed a couple of wickets for the loss of 40 runs.

The hosts put up a valiant effort as they tried to reach the target set by their opponents, but in the end their batting display would prove to be fruitless.

Top scoring for Perranarworthal was opener Brian Fisher who tried to set the tone for the innings with his 69.

But no one else could help out as the home team finished 63 runs short.

caused the most damage among the visiting bowlers picking up three wickets for 24.

Up next for Perranarworthal is a trip to Bottallack and St Levan on Sunday.
