PRIMARY school children are celebrating after winning the basketball competition at the Cornwall School Games.

The team of seven Year Six from Mylor Bridge Primary School bounced away with first place at the tournament, which saw games played at Richard Lander School in Truro.

After going through unbeaten from their group, Mylor then won their semi final before beating Falmouth’s King Charles Primary School in the final to claim the crown.

Team captain Elim Sefi said the side were proud to have won.

“It was good because we know the team we played in the final would be difficult opponents,” he said.

“They were really good but we did really well in the match to beat them to win the trophy.

“We were confident going in as some of us play for the Penryn Saracens, so we were confident in our own ability.”

Vyv Curnow, the school’s sports teacher, added the whole team should be pleased with their overall performance during the tournament.

Mrs Curnow said: “I was delighted about the way they played and after a very close semi final they won the final in super style.

“We are pleased that our children got the opportunity through the sports partnership and also got to compete at the school games at a high level.”
