MULLION could not defend a total of 174 at home as Mount Hawke and Porthtowan collected 17 points from their five wicket victory in Saturday’s Division Three West match.
Batting first in a rain affected game, which saw the overs reduced to 40-a-side, the hosts were again indebted to Dan Johnson who scored 49 not out, but will be encouraged with a return to form for the hard hitting Mark Hall who scored 47.
Matt Grose with Johnson got Mullion to a total of 174-5. For Mount Hawke, a good bowling and fielding display restricted Mullion to a score of under 200.
The visitors found themselves at 41-3, with skipper Benje Bryant scoring 20. Matthew Thomas and Chris Madeley then built a match winning partnership scoring at a good rate and taking the score to 122, before Thomas was caught and bowled by Johnson.
But Mullion’s hopes for a collapse were dashed as Madeley completed an outstanding innings scoring 71 not out, helping Mount Hawke pass the target with two overs to spare. There were two wickets for Mike Cockings and a wicket a piece for Charlie Hearn and Ben Johnson.
