TEENAGER Luke Tripconey broke a record with his batting on Saturday as he became the youngest Mullion player to score a century in a league match.

The 16-year-old achieved this feat by scoring 109 not out for the club’s second team during their game away at Division Five West league leaders Gulval, with his score helping the visitors complete a 45 run victory.

In damp conditions, which were not set to improve, it was a good toss to win for Mullion skipper Darren Turner and he gave the signal to his opening batsmen to get their pads on.

Mullion lost the prolific and usually reliable Phil Wheatley early for a duck and Gulval thought that the wickets would start to tumble.

But Tripconey joined David Brown at the crease and they added 115 for the second wicket before Brown was out for a well deserved 53. The wicket brought Jack Casley to the crease who proceeded to smash a quick fire 52 in a stand of 90 with Tripconey, taking the score to 224-3. During this stand Tripconey had advanced to his maiden 50.

New batsman, 15-year-old Max Roberts, closed out the Mullion innings, scoring 22 not out as Tripconey advanced to his 100. It was a magnificent effort by the fine all-rounder with Mullion finished on 254-3. Gulval’s best bowler was Phil Payne, who took two for 35.

After tea, the skipper threw the ball to Tripconey, who promptly rewarded Turner by clean bowling the opening bat Jonathon Eddy in his second over for eight.

Very tight bowling and some excellent fielding restricted the home team to 62-3 at the drinks interval.

Gulval’s innings eventually closed on 210-5 thanks to Payne’s excellent 85 not out. Casley bowled eight overs, taking one for 15.

Man of the match Tripconey took two for 46 and held two fine catches.
