HELSTON came out as the victors from a Twenty20 triangular competition held in memory a cricketing stalwart.

The Bill Williams Twenty20 Fundraising Tournament was held at Helston Cricket Club and featured the first teams from the host, Troon and Praze who all played each other once.

Williams was a cricketer for Troon and Praze during the 1940s, 50s and 60s who passed away earlier this year at the age of 88.

Rain interrupted the first game between Praze and Helston and the game was reduced to 15 overs per side but the game could not have been more exciting.

Helston batted first making 87 runs as Damian Lynes claimed four wickets and Bradley Bury three. But despite the low target, Praze lost out by one run making as Steve Jenkin grabbed two wickets for Helston in a tidy spell.

Praze then went on to play Troon and made 97-9 from 20 overs, with Sam James top scoring as he made 22 runs and Shane Richards claiming bowling figures of 3-19. Troon passed the score with captain Gavin Tregenza making 26 runs.

This left a straight shoot-out between Helston and Troon to decide the overall winners in the final match.

It was Helston who won the deciding game by 6 wickets. Troon made 113-7, with Shane Richards hitting 32 and Tregenza scoring 28 while Tom Retallack took two wickets.

The hosts set off at a high pace in the run chase and Dan Jenkin 35 and Tommy Sturgess 22 saw them through with four overs to spare.

Trophies were presented to the winning team, umpires and scorers and thanks went to all the people who helped organise the event.

An auction was staged after the cricket compered by Troon’s Mel Shears and £1600 was raised from the auction itself.

In all £860.20 was raised for the Cornwall Air Ambulance and £505 was raised for each of the three cricket teams.
