CELEBRATIONS were had at Budock Vean Golf Club over the weekend as the course’s 50th anniversary was commemorated.

Several events and tournaments took place at the club including the return of past captains and presidents.

Also coming back for the weekend were four professionals, Chris Wharton, Paul Martin, Jamie O’Hara and Chris Ramsden, who all played as juniors at Budock also visited on Saturday.

On the same day, a pairs best ball Stableford competition was held on the course with former captains Richard Burton and Keith Rashleigh coming out on top with 45 points.

Prizes were also given to the next best men’s, women’s and mixed pairs. Rob Gibson and Bob Aggus, another ex-captain, won the men’s with 41, Lesley Upperton and Alison Samuel took home the female trophy with 40 while Glenys Bateson and Keith Eccleston scored 41 together to win the mixed contest.

Afterwards the players enjoyed a buffet dinner next to the putting green where the prizes were also handed out.

Golfers returned to the course on Sunday to play for the John Laughnan Memorial Salvers, named after the club’s former president and captain who died in January last year.

Roger Mildren won the men’s competition after scoring 44, beating Rod Butler who finished second with 39, while third place went to Martin Salome who got 38.

Sue Rule took home the ladies’ salver with her score of 41, putting her five ahead of Barbara Craig in second place. Jenny Wake finished third with 35.

Other matches were had at the club during the week with the senior team winning a friendly against Cape Cornwall.

A Stableford County Voucher Competition was also played for the female members with Denise Powell winning with 40.
