A MASTERFUL display of batting from Richard Kellow helped St Gluvias beat Gulval by 89 runs on Saturday.

The Saints’ opening batsman blasted his way to 133 to lead his team to 292-6 before they declared with ten overs to spare.

It was then left to the spin of Dale Knowles and captain Jon Udy to earn their side 20 points and stay at the top of Division Two West of the Cornwall Cricket League.

Udy won the toss and elected to bat. An early wicket fell in the form of Matt Julian who departed the crease for a duck after being caught behind off Dominic Batchelor.

But Kellow did not copy his opening partner as the hosts struggled to get him out.

With back-up being provided by Jake Preston, who scored 55 before being caught by Ryan Eddy off Jonathan Westren, Kellow made his way to 133 before being caught by Bob Hollinrake off Christopher Butler.

With rain forecast, Udy declared early as he believed Gulval would not get near his side’s total.

However, a slight scare was given to the Saints as Eddy and Batchelor smashed 44 runs off the first five overs in their team’s response.

But after Udy brought himself on along with fellow spinner Knowles, Gulval’s innings slowed and eventually saw wickets start to fall.

The visiting skipper ended with figures of three for 40 while Knowles picked up four wickets for 33 runs as the hosts were bowled out for 203.
