SAILORS took to the waters at Mylor Yacht Club for the Heard Memorial Race on Sunday, writes Chris Davis.
This race, held in memory of Mylor boatbuilders Terry and Martin Heard, of Tregatreath, is a firm fixture in the Mylor calendar and the working boats made a fine sight in almost perfect conditions, carrying all sail in the upper reaches of the Carrick Roads.
A total of seven boats turned out in B class, the large working boats and the first four or five boats finished very close together but the race was won, very appropriately, by Sam Heard, Martin’s son, in Abigail Rose, with Rebeccas, captained by Phil Slater, taking second place and Rita, manned by John Peters, coming third.
In C class, the small working boats, three vessels took part and they too had a close race, despite some confusion about the identity of the first windward mark.
Paul Ferris’ Lottie took first place, with Deliverance, skippered by Mike Stratton and Sam Harding captained Leila taking second and third place respectively. Sue Grigg, sailing her gaffer Katy, was the only competitor in G class.
