CHARITY sailing races took place at Flushing Sailing Club on Tuesday with £250 raised for Cornwall Air Ambulance, writes Chris Jelliss.

A southerly breeze turned into a northerly, but race officer Len Cheshire decided as it was the charity race, everyone would start.

He set race officer's choice for the faster boats round Pendennis mark and finish, and Governor and finish for the slower boats.

Per Elisa took off like a long dog in Q class and won the race IRC rating. Encore won on handicap and David Cunliffe took the prizes belatedly at the club.

Jon Peters took Rita to a win in B class, though Victory had line honours. John Fox took Excelle, a Sigma 33, to victory in E classes, both IRC and on handicap.

Sue Grigg sailed Katy to a good win in G class showing her skills in light airs.

Mayfly sailed by Ray Steadman won the Sunbeam class. Nigel Glanville's 'new' Sunbeam Ivy makes a welcome addition to the fleet, and surely once he gets to grips with her he will be as competitive as he was in Morwennel. Amneris sailed by Mike Robson romped home in W class.

Jennie Jelliss sailing Outsider had a brilliant start hoisting the kite on starboard pole and leading the fleet all the way to the Governor buoy and then a beat to the club line.

A slight technical hitch where the mainsail outhaul detached gave cause for concern on the final few tacks up the harbour as they were chased by Popincoota, Wilkie and Aurora. However the lead was good enough to secure victory on both national handicap and IRC rating.
