LIZARD defeated Cury 2-1 on Saturday to claim third place in the 2014 Ron Curnow Memorial Tournament.

Despite ending up as the losing side, Cury started the match played at Clifden Parc in Mullion with centre forward Graham Cook going close two minutes as he was put through on goal, only to scuff a shot over.

After eventually settling into the game, Lizard started to create chances of their own with Luke Higgs curled a shot over the bar from the edge of the penalty area in the 14th minute.

In the build-up though, a much better opportunity had presented itself to Higgs’ team-mate Olly Hawkin as he was played into space in the box, but the midfielder passed the ball away after not realising how much room he had around.

Two minutes later, Hayden Clark got a header on target for Lizard from a corner which was flapped at by goalkeeper Chris Cook before the ball was cleared after a scramble in the six yard box.

Lizard pressed Cury hard during the half, forcing their opponents into mistakes up the field with passes going astray.

Their work-rate paid off in the 33rd minute when they took the lead through a comical own goal by Scott Lewis, who slammed the ball into the net as he tried to clear it out for a corner.

This came after Cook had made a good save from a shot by Dagon Vaughn-Spruce.

The lead was doubled three minutes later from the penalty spot after Vaughn-Spruce was pulled back in the box.

He took the spot-kick himself, calmly slotting the ball past Cook.

Cury tried to apply pressure themselves in the second half as they searched for goals as Lizard’s defence toiled in the hot weather.

Their opponents would not budge though until the last minute when James Hawkins scored a consolation goal after showing good control in the penalty area before slotting past Luc Evans.
