AFTER stringing together nine league wins on the trot, St Gluvias could not make it ten as they fell just short away at Camborne.

The side who went into Saturday’s match as leaders of Division Two West of the Cornwall Cricket League were beaten by ten runs as they failed to chase 210.

It is the first time the promotion chasers have lost in the division since their defeat to Paul by 11 runs in a reduced overs game on May 26.

Following Saturday’s result, the Saints drop down to second place, three points behind Paul who stuffed St Ives by 138 runs.

With five fixtures left for both clubs, it now seems the league title will be decided later this month on Bank Holiday Monday when the sides clash at Kernick Road.

A league ruling will prevent Paul, who dropped down from the Premier Division in March, from going up, but the promotion spot can be awarded to the team finishing second.

Visiting skipper Jon Udy won the toss at Camborne and elected to bowl first.

It was a strange innings for the home side as they batted their way to 210-9 off 48 overs without anyone scoring more than 47, as no batsman pushed on from making decent starts.

Giles Head fell early for the hosts with 11 to his name as Andrew Julian took a catch off Scott Kellow’s bowling.

Chris Gibson and Callum Moyle proved to be harder to get out as they put on 30 and 33 respectively.

Udy got out opening bat Gibson before Richard Kellow, who took the catch for his captain’s wicket, sent Moyle back to the pavilion as Nathan Hill grabbed a stumping opportunity.

David Trestail and Scott Harris added some more meat to the Camborne innings as they both went towards half centuries, only for both to fall just short.

Trestail was a victim of Julian after reaching 47 before Harris, on 46, was caught off Scott Kellow, who would end up with four wickets for 44.

When it became the visitor’s turn to bat, things appeared to be going well as Jake Preston made his way to 50 while Matt Julian got to 37.

However, Preston could not add anymore runs to his half century as he was judged to be LBW off Harris’ bowling.

Julian also departed the crease as he nicked behind to Darren Pascoe off Harris.

Udy and Hill both made starts for the Saints as they scored 39 and 25, but both lost their wicket to Moyle as the all-rounder had the away captain caught and the wicketkeeper bowled.

With the overs ticking away, Saints tried to force their way to their target but ducks in the lower order for Andrew Julian and Jack Hesketh proved costly.

These were added to an earlier nought scored by number six batsman Josh Kelly.

Tailenders Dale Knowles, who scored ten, and Sam Kruse, three, stayed at the crease until the end, but alas could not see their side over the line as they ended on 200-9.

Redruth’s second team are next up for the Saints.
