PENRYN Athletic’s joint manager Steve Jewell hopes the help of former Bolton and Arsenal boss Bruce Rioch will inspire his team to the Peninsula League West title.

The Scotsman, pictured right, has been leading training sessions at Kernick Road during pre-season, having done the same at Wendron over the last year.

Borough start their 2014/15 season campaign away at Sticker on Saturday and Jewell thinks the lessons from Rioch will prove to be invaluable.

Jewell said: “From my point of view, I’ve learnt more in the last seven or eight weeks being around Bruce than I have in the rest of my footballing career.

“The players have responded really well to him and it has been a big bonus for us in pre-season having Bruce come down to take training sessions.

“His enthusiasm is amazing and his attention to detail is so impressive, so even if the lads only take in five or ten per cent of what he’s been saying, they should be challenging for the title.”

A number of new faces have arrived at the club over the summer including Like Braybon, Hal Davies, Ben Packman and Adam Toy while David Leech has moved up from the youth ranks to the senior team.

After finishing fifth last season, Jewell believes the side need to convert some of the six draws they got in 2013/14 into victories in order to win the league.

“If you look at the league, there are no teams in there that you think a guaranteed three points is on offer,” he said.

“We have to turn up to every game with the right attitude or we’ll get turned over.

“There are a lot of draws in the league and we had six last season, so if we can turn those into wins and grind results out, I think that will be the difference for us.

“Sticker will be tough on Saturday as they are a well organised team, but everyone is really excited to be going into competitive football again so I hopeful we’ll get a result.”
