HELSTON Athletic boss Sid Taylor said he was really chuffed to see his side win the 2014 Dave Gardner Trophy.

The tournament, named after the central defender who died in 2003 after losing a battle with cancer, was claimed by the Blues after they went unbeaten over their three games.

They scored a total of 15 goals in the competition which was completed with a 5-0 win against Penzance at Porthleven's Gala Parc on Saturday.

Taylor said: “I thought our lads played some really good football over the three matches and at times it looked really professional.

“To score 15 goals over the three games was fantastic and showed we created numerous chances and could have actually scored more.

“The lads kept the ball well and winning a tournament like this just a week before the league season starts is the best possible preparation you can have going in as it gives you momentum.

“What I’m also pleased with is that the guys stayed down at Porthleven long after the game ended. They really took to the tournament and enjoyed playing in it.”
