BOARDMASTERS killed Porthleven’s chance of three points on Saturday according to their boss Dennis Annear.

The Fishermen lost their season opener 2-1 at home to Bude Town with a penalty from Steve Box alongside another goal from Tommy Stratton winning it for the visitors.

Tom Annear scored a wonderful goal for the hosts at Gala Parc, but ultimately it was not enough for Port to secure any points.

With six players going down to Newquay for the annual music and surfing festival the night before the game, Annear believes this had a major affect on his team’s performance.

Annear said: “I know it might sound a bit silly, but Boardmasters killed us.

“We had half a dozen guys go on Friday and two did not come back and the four 17-year-olds that did were not at their top level as they had been having a good time.

“But it is no real excuse for us to use. We did not play well enough and made errors at the back which caused Bude’s goals.”

After the loss, Annear said he hopes the weekend will act as a learning curve to his young players about game preparation.

“It is difficult because I used to be the same when I was younger,” he said.

“They are young guys and they are having fun which is fine.

“But I think youngsters today do not seem to have the same desire as what we had years ago.

“They probably think they are just like superheroes and prepare how they want.

“Hopefully what happened on Saturday has taught them a lesson for the future.”
