SCHOOLBOY defending cost Falmouth Town a perfect start to the season on Saturday as they drew 3-3 against Newquay at Bickland Park.

John Dent said he was disappointed to see his side concede three goals like they did, having held a 2-0 lead after 22 minutes and then being 3-2 up at half time.

Rob Wearne scored twice in the space of 120 seconds to give Town a great start to the match, but the visitors found themselves on level terms through goals by Matt Drummond and Jack Bray-Evans by the half hour mark.

Kayne Trevaskis had put the hosts back in front in the 38th minute.

However, a second from Bray-Evans in the 65th minute meant the points were shared in the season opener.

Dent said the most disappointing thing for him was how the defence performed in the build up to the goals.

“The first half was a bit mad,” Dent said.

“I have seen halves like that a few times before and we did take our goals well.

“But the defending from us was schoolboy at best for all three of Newquay’s goals and that is something we have to sort out.

“What is annoying is that last year our back four were quite tight, so to come into a new season and concede three times is very disappointing.”

With the Ambers setting their sights initially on surviving the South West Peninsula League Premier, after finishing in the bottom five last season, Dent said the defence must improve to ensure the target is reached.

He said: “We were coasting at 2-0 and then we gave them two goal to allow them back in, which was a big turning point in my view as their heads were down at 2-0.

“Our first aim of the season is to get enough points to avoid relegation and at least getting a point in the first game is a start.

“But if we keep defending like that, then we won’t achieve our points target.”
