CORNISH mountain bike riders were successful on home soil as the British 4x Championships came to Falmouth.

Cyclists from across the country came to Penance Farm for the series of races on Saturday and Sunday with competitions for ages groups from 11-year-olds up to senior level on a track made a bit trickier from the weather blown in by Hurricane Bertha.

In the Elite category, Scott Beaumont took the title after winning the final which did not feature local favourite Will Evans, from Ponsanooth, after the Majola/Falmouth Cycle rider crashed out in the heats.

There was glory for cyclists from Cornwall in two other categories though as Fin Keough, from Grampound Road, and Tyde D’Souza, from Gwenap, won their races.

Keough pedalled to victory in the Juvenile Men section in what was a thrilling final as he came from behind to squeeze past his opponents on each of the course’s jumps before getting over the line first.

D’Souza had to battle with Truro’s Megan Wherry, the reigning Juvenile Women champion, with the latter winning the first two races before her rival claimed a victory in the third.

Then in the final, D’Souza managed to pass Wherry on the inside after the champion had gained an early lead.

From there, she held onto her lead to pick up the title.

Falmouth-based Chris Cummin claimed a bronze medal in the masters competition while Truro’s Team Dirt Bike School rider Ashley England, making his competitive debut, won silver in the 11-12 Ripper race.
