STEVE Jewell has praised the rise of several young players who have come into Penryn Athletic’s side via Falmouth United.

The team which featured for Borough on Saturday away at Perranporth contained seven players who have come to the club through work done with players from the youth football side based at Penryn College in Poltisko Road.

Among these players, Dave Broglino scored for Athletic while two others, Luke Brabyn and David Leach, were involved in the build up for a couple of goals.

Joint manager Jewell said the contribution from the former United players has been great for Borough.

Jewell said: “The guys we have brought through from our partnership with Falmouth United have been great for us.

“To have so many coming into the line up is a positive. While we warmed up on Saturday I counted them and found there were seven who had come through the system and this did not include Dave Blizzard, who has featured for us this season already.

“What is most important is that they are not just coming in and making up numbers, they are getting in and providing us with goals and assists.”

He went onto say the influx of young footballers will not only have a good affect on the club today, but will also boost things in years to come.

“You do need to give the kids a chance at some point and by doing so they become part of the club and also the club’s future,” he said.

“I have been working with the teams at United for seven years overall and in all of those years we have been bringing youngsters through the ranks and into Athletic.

“It shows there is space for local footballers to become a big part of their local club and you don’t always have to rely on bringing players from outside the area to be successful.”
