Falmouth’s Premier League season came to a low key end at Trescobeas on Saturday with a six wicket defeat against St Austell.

There was nothing at stake for either side with Falmouth having already achieved safety and St Austell assured fifth spot.

Falmouth have hardly enjoyed home comforts this year. Back in May they drew against Camborne and beat Callington by seven wickets. A run of six successive defeats have followed with the August Bank Holiday Monday game against Truro cancelled.

Thankfully wins at Redruth, Camborne and Callington have saved the season.

After being put in Adrian Noott was bowled by Callum Wilson for five. Guy Leathley, promoted up the order to replace Arup Revandkar, was dismissed by Liam Watson for a single and Antony Angove followed in similar fashion.

Mark Johnson and Harry Roberts got the total to 41 before the innings subsided. Four wickets fell for as many runs to make it 45 for seven.

Johnson was caught and bowled by Watson for 24. Kieran Rodda (16) and tailender Liam Hoban (14) were the only others in double figures.

Watson took four for 30 and Steve Raven three for 15. George Popperwell got an early strike to remove Mike Bone for a duck. Glyn Furnival then bowled Wilson for 15.

After Alan George was bowled by Furnival for six Hugh Parkinson (25no) and Dan Jarman (21) saw the visitors home in the 16th over for the loss of four wickets.

Furnival took two for 38 and there was one each for Popperwell and Leathley. The game was all over in mid afternoon, having only lasted 42 overs.

Elsewhere on the final day there was a thrilling finale at the bottom of the table with Redruth surviving with just minutes to go in the gathering gloom at Werrington.

Callington had been bowled out for 99 at St Just and lost to the champions by nine wickets and, crucially, failed to pick up a point. It meant Redruth needed seven points to survive. They got five by tea-time after bowling the home side out for 186.

Needing to reach the 125 run mark at 70 for six they feared the worst. However former Stithians skipper Martin Strick and Ben Stevens combined to send Callington down. Camborne beat Newquay by five wickets in a game that became irrelevant to the relegation scenario as soon as Callington’s defeat was confirmed.

Truro finished third despite losing to Grampound Road.
