Penryn College sent a team of 16 athletes to compete in the Annual Gyllnvaise Relay triathlon organised by TR1 Coaching’s Allan Reid.

The event itself is a 250m open water sea swim in choppy conditions that was followed by a series of 2.5km undulating laps on a well marshalled closed road bike course around the picturesque Pendennis Castle and to finish an energy sapping flat 2km run up to castle beach and back.

Triathlon coach Mark Lewarne, who is based at Penryn College and prepared the squad, was delighted with the performances of the team and commented on how well each athlete performed in what was their first ever triathlon.

“It’s great to see so many getting involved in triathlons and having fun as well, the event had a great atmosphere, and I will be preparing the team at the college over the winter months for a crack at the Cornwall Junior Series next year.

“If there are any students who would like to be involved in triathlon training which will include indoor cycle sessions and some bike/run splits around the college then come and have a chat with me, and join in with the programme which will be starting over the winter.”

There were some top performances from the squad and Penryn Team PR1 who were awarded the gold medal in the junior category race, beating many other more experienced teams from Mounts Bay and Truro. It is hoped that the squad will now focus on winter training ahead of the 2015 season.

The college has extended their thanks to the organisers, marshals and safety crew for all their support on the race day.

Squad: Kerris Phillips, Alex Taylor, Elenor Moore, Liberty Hartly, Sam Goodchild, Matt Pereira, Sam O’Nyons, Patrick Hall, Zoe Pixton, Ella Nesbitt, Harly Beale, Floyd Radcliffe, Ollie Turner, Brodie Kemp, Maisy Bennett, Bertie Duncan.
