A FIFTH win of the season saw Penryn Athletic move up to third in the South West Peninsula League West Division table on Saturday.

Goals from David Leech and Ben Oliver were enough to see off Liskeard Athletic at Kernick Road and move Borough five points behind league leaders Helston Athletic ahead of tonight’s clash between the two sides.

The match was the only game to take place in the West Division as the first round of the Walter C Parson League Cup ate up the majority of the fixture list and it was also the first meeting between the teams in nine seasons.

Borough were not in cup action due to their original opponents, set to be either Truro City Reserves or Foxhole Stars, folding before the season’s start.

It was the hosts who set the early pace with Ollie Moody going close with a chipped effort after spotting Liskeard’s goalkeeper Adam Bainbridge off his line.

The shot was tipped over the bar as Bainbridge frantically raced back towards goal, but from the corner which resulted, Penryn opened the afternoon’s scoring.

Leech got the first touch in the penalty area as he nodded the ball goalwards, sparking a melee in the six yard box before the 16-year-old finished the job off as he forced the ball over the line.

Not content with just one goal, Leech went close twice more in quick succession, first firing a shot across the face of goal before sending another effort smashing into the crossbar as Liskeard’s defence looked disorientated.

After the break, Dave Broglino and Tyler Cooke both went close for the home side, but Liskeard looked full of purpose in the second half as they searched for an equaliser.

However, they were unable to get past the wall-like defence of Borough with Ryan Martt, Dave Blizzard and captain Oliver putting in fine displays at the back.

Oliver then settled the game in the 68th minute when he ran to the near post at a corner taken by Broglino and nodded home.

After the second goal, Borough tried to see out the match and keep Liskeard at bay.

But the hosts received a blow with five minutes left when goalkeeper Chris Symons was forced to leave the field after pulling a muscle.

By this point Penryn had used all three of their substitutes, so they had to finish the game with ten men and Greg Hobbs between the sticks.

Despite this, it did not stop them securing their fourth clean sheet of the season.

PENRYN: Symons, Blizzard, May, Toy (Johnson 69), Oliver (c), Martt, Brabyn, Moody, Leech (Hobbs 69), Broglino, Cooke (Lawrence 55).
