PORTHLEVEN manager Dennis Annear said he was frustrated his side did not finish their Walter C Parson Cup tie off in regulation time - but is happy to get through.

The Fishermen got into the next round of the competition only after having to take part in a penalty shoot-out against Penzance at Gala Parc on Saturday.

Paul Cox's strike in the 81st minute saw the game go into extra time and then penalties after cancelling out Jed McCardie's goal for Port.

In a scrappy game, the hosts had played better football, but wasted chances to finish off their opposition.

Annear said going through a penalty shoot-out was something he felt Port should not have had to do, but appreciated this is the nature of cup games sometimes.

"I was a little bit annoyed because it should not have got to that point," he said.

"Overall we had about 60 or 70 per cent of possession, but we didn't play at our best.

"We did have three or four players coming back into the side after not playing for a few weeks and cup games are about getting into the next round and that means either winning ugly or with some luck."

Up next in the competition for Port is an away tie at Godolphin Atlantic on October 18, which Annear expects will be a tough match.

But despite facing up to opposition a division above them, the Fishermen's boss believes he team can still put up a stern test.

Annear said: "I have always said I want to play against the best sides.

"It is nice to have a good cup run and with that you need a bit of luck in the draw, but this time round we have Godolphin away so it will be a tough task.

"We have a few weeks before the tie to get our guys back into full fitness and get ready for the game next month.

"I haven't watched Godolphin this season, but from previous experience I know they are a footballing side and we tend to play better against teams like that rather than those who play long balls or press hard.

"Hopefully it will be a good game and another learning curve for us and if the guys come off afterwards with their heads held high knowing they did their best, no matter what the result is, then that is all I can ask for."

Porthleven’s next match is on Saturday away at St Dennis.
