A THRILLING night of end-to-end football saw Penryn Athletic break Helston's perfect start to the season at Kernick Road.

Dale Band's 85th minute winner saw Borough complete a 5-4 victory over the Blues who finished the South West Peninsula League West match with nine men.

With Helston first and Penryn third in the table heading into the clash, plenty of excitement had built up around the game and it did not take long for this anticipation to erupt on the pitch.

In the third minute, Kevin Lawrence twisted and turned down the right wing, sending his marker Aaron Collick dizzy, before laying off to Ollie Moody to crack home a shot.

The hosts were forced to play young Alex Prynn in goal after regular number one Chris Symons pulled up in the warm up, having sustained an injury late on in heir 2-0 triumph over Liskeard on Saturday.

Moments of inexperienced show from Prynn during the game and Helston first capitalised on this in the tenth minute when his poor goal kick only went to Andrew Westgarth.

The striker got to the byline before pulling it back to Charlie Young, who then danced around several challenges before scoring.

Lawrence sent Borough back into the lead three minutes later when he curled home a shot from the edge of the box, but the lead last just 120 seconds as Jason Robertson beat Prynn to a left wing cross to nod it into the net.

Borough did not look deterred by letting the lead slip away twice and just after the half hour mark went ahead again.

After a Helston corner, the home side broke away and after stringing a few passes together, Luke Brabyn was set free into the box where he made no mistake with his shot.

After the break, Helston striker Andrew Westgarth made it 3-3 when he tapped home from inside the six yard box as the ball was played in along the floor from the right hand side of the penalty area.

But Borough's little midfield dynamo Lawrence, who showed great determination all night, acted as a creative force for his side and minutes later cut in from the left before setting up Brabyn to fizz a shot past Martyn Webster.

Prynn's inexperience cropped up again shortly after the hour mark when he allowed Ash Stidwell's cross to drift by, expecting it to go wide.

Much to his astonishment, he turned around to see the ball float into the goal, making it 4-4.

The game was sat on a knife-edge, but the pivotal moment came with 21 minutes left when Ben Stidwell received his marching orders for deliberate handball.

His red card came when he and Webster collided with each other as they tried to get to the bouncing ball before Borough substitute Band could.

Helston were a little hard done by in the decision as there was probably not a lot the defender could do in the situation, but still he had to go.

Despite having an extra man, Borough struggled to keep the ball as they desperately searched for a fifth.

However, when they finally strung together several passes, it produced the winner.

Their midfield manoeuvred the play around the Helston half before Sean Johnson put Band through to fire a shot on an angle into the net.

The commotion had not finished for the night yet as Ash Stidwell followed his relative to an early bath when he received two bookings in the space of a minute in injury time.

The first came for diving after Band had made a good but hearty challenge on him, again a decision which felt a bit harsh on the Helston player.

Then moments later, he got his second yellow card for dissent.

The loss is Helston's first in all competitions this season and next up for them on Saturday is a trip to Illogan RBL, who are now third as Penryn leapfrogged them after their win.
