CHRIS Morgan said a bonus points win was just the tonic the Cornish Pirates needed after a tough beginning to the season.

Having lost their opening three games of the Greene King IPA Championship season to Yorkshire Carnegie, London Scottish and Bristol, the team’s 29-19 victory at home to Moseley sees them jump off the bottom of the table.

Next up for the Pirates is a trip to Doncaster Knights on Saturday and their skipper told the Packet he believes the win will give the camp a welcome boost.

Morgan said: “Every week is a must win game, but these games against sides like Moseley are the matches where we need to set our stall out.

“At the start of the season we had three tough games against good teams and we put in good performances, but getting a win will put in a bit of forward momentum to us this week and get us going.

“It is nice to get a win as although we’ve put in decent performances in the first three games, we’ve still been losing so getting five points gives the boys a lot of heart moving onto Doncaster on Saturday, which will be another tough game.”

With the Pirates being given a scare by their opponents from the Midlands, who closed a 22 point gap to just three in the second half, Morgan added he was also pleased to see the side grind out the result.

“Moseley had the momentum during the second half which is always a worry against them,” he said.

“They’ve done that a few times before against us and got draws and wins from losing situations.

“But the boys acquitted themselves well and I’m pleased with the effort shown at the end.

“We have spoken about our ambition to play good rugby and we did that in the first half, so now we just need to do that for 80 minutes.”
