CONFIDENCE and happiness levels are high at Helston Rugby Club as they head into the 2014/15 season.

On Saturday the team begin the Tribute Cornwall One League campaign away at Stithians after a busy summer which has seen new faces and plenty of action on the field at Clodgey Lane.

Helston’s warm up for the new season has included two victories over St Just, the first 45-14 before being involved in a much closer match on September 20 when they recorded a 16-15 win.

Newcomers to the club have also made an impact already including Pete Mabbott, who scored a hat-trick from the wing in Saturday’s friendly with Hayle’s second XV, and flanker James Wright.

Director of rugby Niall Devenish said preparation has gone really well and there is plenty of excitement around the club.

Devenish said: “We have had a good pre-season and I think the mood in the camp is very good and positive.

“We have set ourselves targets in both the league and cup competitions we’re playing in and although I don’t want to reveal them in public, they match the ambition we have at the club.

“Hopefully with the mood we are in, we can achieve those targets.”

Last season Helston finished sixth in the division, one spot below their opponents on Saturday.

Devenish said he expects the game to be hard, just like all the matches in the league.

“Every league game is going to be a tough game our division,” he said.

“You cannot afford to go into any of them taking things for granted, so I’m expecting it to be hard on Saturday against Stithians because that is the nature of the league.”
