HAVING several teams fighting it out for the South West Peninsula League West title is good for the competition.

Helston Athletic boss Sid Taylor said the fierce contest brewing in the division at the moment will only make the league more attractive and exciting.

His side are currently top the table on 24 points, but do so only by goal difference with Penryn Athletic, Illogan RBL and St Dennis all on the same total.

Despite the pressure beginning to mount, the Blues’ manager said he is not overly worried about proceedings yet and is glad to see many sides having a say in the title race.

Taylor said: “Personally I think it is great for the league to have a number of teams setting the pace.

“In the last few seasons, sides such as Newquay, Godolphin and Camelford who have run away with the title.

“But you get the feeling it is going to be so much more entertaining this season with us, Penryn, Illogan and St Dennis on level points and teams like Mousehole and Sticker just behind.

“Some of the results have been surprising too and for people watching or with an interest in the league, that is what you want to see.”

Penryn had the opportunity to knock Athletic off the top spot in their last game, but fell to a 2-1 defeat to Dobwalls.

Taylor said being at the head of the table is providing lots of confidence to his side.

However, he added there is no room for Athletic to be resting on their laurels.

“It is nice to be sitting at the top of the league at this point,” Taylor said.

“But the title is not won at the end of October, so we have to keep sharp and make sure we are performing as best we can.

“It is nice to have a break from the league this weekend, but staying in the cup will be important particularly in a game against a rival team.

“The result is the most important thing in cup football and a win will boost us going forward to our next league match against Sticker.”
