THIS was always going to be a hard task and as Crediton have proved they are the best side Falmouth have played so far.

The final score was always in doubt until the last seven minutes when the Eagles only have themselves to blame as a combination of turnovers, knock-ons and poor tackling allowed the home supporters something to calm their nerves.

Up until this stage with the score at only 10-3, the two sides had slugged out an interesting second half.

Then home centre, Chris Simpson broke clear inside the Falmouth 22, avoiding several attempted tackles to touch down.

Mark Lee added the extra and from the restart, the kick from the Eagles failed to make the required ten metres.

Crediton took the scrum and spun the ball wide where Lee’s pace and strength saw him over to clinch victory.

It was a real pity because the first half was keenly contested and for the most part defences were on top.

As the game progressed it seemed inevitable this was going to be a close encounter as both sides defended as if their lives depended on the outcome.

It took 22 minutes to provide the scoreboard operator the chance to flex his muscles, when centre Lee was handed a penalty just.

The hosts added a converted try to their total after a trio of five metre scrum forced a driving maul, which saw evergreen prop Wayne Reed force his way over.

With the score 10-0 against their favour, Falmouth started showing force in the second half with style, but could only score one penalty from the boot of Justin Irons.

Among the individual performances for the Eagles, special mention must go to John Tyson playing at scrum-half for the first time and it was an impressive display he put in.

The coaches will now have to dot the I’s and cross the T’s in preparation for Saturday’s visit of Exeter Saracens, which will be a must win fixture for the home team.
