IT was a bad day at the office on Saturday for Penryn as they were trampled over by Wadebridge Camels.

The hosts put Borough to the sword in the Tribute Western Counties West match as they prevented their line from being breached and picked up a try scoring bonus point in the process.

A sluggish start for the visitors saw them trail 20-0 early on, and a tough afternoon was made tougher by two yellow cards and four injuries for the Borough on a day they would undoubtedly like to forget.

Penryn would have gone into the game hoping to start as they finished against Truro last week, nearly pipping their high flying rivals at the death, especially after Wadebridge had gone down to struggling Sidmouth.

Unfortunately though, it was an all too familiar story of a slow start giving Penryn a mountain to climb and ultimately one they were never likely to scale.

Following the first kick off which did not go the full ten metres, Penryn’s scrum, the one plus on the day, shunted the home pack nearly 15 metres, but it proved to be for no reward, albeit a promising start.

Within minutes though, Wadebridge had struck.

Missed tackles in the Penryn midfield led to the opening score as Wadebridge’s power plays caused mayhem for a 7-0 lead following the conversion.

Scrum-half Nathan Strick was then sin-binned for a deliberate knock-on and would return only for a few minutes after his ten minute cool off following a heavy knock before his yellow card.

During this time, the hosts stepped it up again and more powerful break were met with missed tackles and the Camels scored again.

The conversion was missed, but they soon made up for that with a penalty goal to extend the lead to 15.

The Borough then lost Tom Hoban to a suspected rib injury as things went from bad to worse.

Their scrum continued to dominate with little reward, before the home side added a third score to effectively kill the game off.

Penryn raised their physicality towards the end of the half to give some hope, but the 20-0 half time score made grim reading.

The beginning of the second half was much improved from a Penryn perspective, as they started to show glimpses of their capabilities with Harry James-Mills and Jack Willey catching the eye.

Their progress was halted yet again though, as centre Ben Jordan left the field following a heavy blow to the head.

Borough simply could not get any momentum and were halted again following a second yellow card of the afternoon, this time for Ross Hancock who was deemed to have made a dangerous challenge.

Penryn defended valiantly to prolong the bonus point score for the hosts, but also lost Chris Instance during the sin-bin period.

Hoban bravely returning to ensure the Borough didn’t go down to 13.

To Penryn’s credit, they fought right to the end but couldn’t hold off the Camels final surge, as two further tries sealed Penryn’s fate and a bonus point for the home team.

Final score 32-0 to Wadebridge and a miserable day at the office for the Borough, who will be desperately seeking a return to winning ways this Saturday at home to Devonport Services.
