SID Taylor believes coming up against South West Peninsula League Premier sides in cup competitions will give them a barometer of how close Helston Athletic are to fulfilling their ambitions.

After beating their West Division rivals Illogan RBL 3-1 at Kellaway Park on Saturday, the Blues were paired with University of Exeter from the league’s East division in the third round draw of the Walter C Parson Cup.

The match will take place on December 13 in Devon.

Taylor admitted he would have liked to have a home game, but said he is happy to still be in the cup.

He added the better the opponents they play will show where Athletic are in terms of achieving their future goals.

Taylor said: “The lads did want an away draw to somewhere in Devon so they could make a bit of a night out around it, although I personally would have preferred anyone at home.

“Overall it makes no difference to me who we face in the competition as with the teams in there from the Premier division, it is a difficult cup to win.

“We have to be optimistic going through the stages though and our ambition is to make it into the Premier, so if we end up coming against one of those sides then it will give us a good chance to see where we are in terms of achieving that.

“I hear people saying that the cup is not that important, but a couple of years ago we got to the semis and it is good to do that, so we’ll just keep going and see where we go this season.”
