PENRYN Athletic moved up to third in the South West Peninsula League West division thanks to a 3-2 win over Vospers Oak Villa.

In what was a remarkably clean match, with the first foul being awarded in the 90th minute, all five goals came in the first half with Scott Palmer, Kevin Lawrence and Luke Brabyn hitting the target for the hosts.

It was only Vospers third defeat of the season in the league and they were caught out early on as after ten minutes, Athletic took the lead.

Good thinking by defender Ryan Martt saw the play switched over to the right flank where his found Brabyn.

The midfielder raced onto the pass before pulling it back from the byline to Palmer to sweep home the ball, capping off a brilliant move.

Vospers then took control of the game for a while with home goalkeeper Chris Symons being forced to make a couple of saves.

However, he had no answer in the 22nd minute when the equaliser came from Andy Harris as he arrived in the box to reach a rebound first after Ryan Bass had a shot saved and slam it past Symons.

Just when it seemed the Vospers' steam roller was getting into full flow, Athletic dealt them a sucker punch as Lawrence shook off his marker before sending an effort across Ian Evans and inside the far post.

Brabyn extended the lead seven minutes later after he was played in by Lawrence and the winger had plenty of time to tuck home the ball past the stranded Evans.

A lifeline was delivered for Vospers on the stroke of half time as Lewis Young turned his marker Rob Dunn both ways before powering a shot from eight yards out which Symons could not stop.

After the break both sides have a lot of near misses as they looked to claim the points.

Palmer came close for Penryn as he had a firmly hit shot parried away by Evans before Dale Band proved to be the man in the right place at the right time when he cleared a header off Athletic's goal-line.

Perranporth await Penryn next in the Cornwall Charity Cup, which kicks off at 2pm on Saturday.
