PORTHLEVEN manager Dennis Annear has called for referees to use their common sense after seeing his side experience a number of dodgy decisions against them.

It comes after Port lost 3-2 at Illogan RBL on Saturday during a South West Peninsula League West game which saw two big calls go against the visitors.

Claims for a penalty after Liam Hunter was taken out by home goalkeeper Steve Parker-Billings were turned down before in the build-up to RBL’s first goal, Benji Bryant was stamped on.

Annear felt his side have not had the rub of the green in recent weeks on the decisions front.

“I thought the boys were unlucky on Saturday and even Illogan’s guys said so,” he said.

“There were two clear fouls which did not go our way although they were clear to see for everyone else.

“Refereeing is a very difficult job and one I know I could not do myself with all the law changes that keep being made and the lack of respect they do get at times.

“But they just need to be using more common sense because if a man gets taken out it’s a foul and a yellow or if he is the last man it’s a red card, that hasn’t changed.”

Having lost their last three games in all competitions, Annear admitted frustration is taking hold of Port’s young squad.

With a match against bottom place Perranporth coming up on Saturday, he said the team must keep their heads in order to get out of their bad run.

Annear said: “I’ve got to be honest, on Saturday some of the players were in tears after the game.

“They are playing good football but are being outmuscled and getting decisions go against them, so it is easy to understand why they are frustrated.

“We have a good chance of changing our fortunes against Perranporth, but we must not be complacent and just expect to beat them because they are bottom.

“If you put in the same effort that we have showed in recent weeks against teams above us, then I think we will get a result.”
