GLIMPSES of their top form was shown by Camborne as they maintained their unbeaten home record and ended Thornbury’s winning run at the same time.

A brace of tries from home skipper Steve Kenward along with scores by Rob Floyd, Taron Peacock and the returning Alex Ducker, who re-signed for the club from Cornish Pirates on Thursday, helped Town to an entertaining 37-27 victory at the Recreation Ground.

With both Cleve and Ivybridge going down to defeat, the Cherry and Whites also closed the gap at the top with only four points now separating the three sides at the summit of Tribute South West One West.

The visitors, who came into Saturday’s match on a five game unbeaten run, took an early lead when centre Tim Stephens strolled through a couple of tackles to touch down for Matt Belbin to convert.

A penalty from 40m out was also put between the posts by the fly-half to open a ten point lead in the tenth minute.

Kenward got a response in for the hosts as Town countered with David Mankee’s clever cross-field kick being fielded by Floyd out on the wing.

But with 20 minutes still not yet completed, Thornbury made it 15-5 as Rich Bennett burst down the wing to score a well taken individual try.

Control was seized though by the hosts for the remainder of the half with Ducker creating their second try after a dazzling run ended with a pass to Adam Lewarne.

The lock offloaded to Kenward who dived over.

Not long afterwards the lead was taken by Town as Peacock nipped over the line under the posts after the home side had progressed deep into Thornbury territory.

They could not add to the lead before half time despite seeing an away player put in the sin-bin, but shortly after the restart a bonus point try was scored as Peacock raced 60m before delivering the ball to Floyd to dot down.

Mankee added the two conversion points with a very well judged kick from out wide making it 24-15.

Ducker then capped his first game back at the club with a try of his own as he came in off the left flank to take a pass and jink in under the crossbar to give Mankee an easy conversion.

Camborne tried to get over the line several more times but were thwarted by a defiant Thornbury defence.

Their shift at the back was rewarded when prop George Sheldon went over after the visitors gradually worked their way up the field.

A straightforward penalty was slotted home by Mankee from 30m out to extend the lead to 14 points, but a neat chip by Belbin brought a try for Thornbury centre Rob Higgitt.

But just as it seemed the visitors had grabbed two bonus points, Mankee ripped the one for losing by seven points or less away as he nailed a long range penalty with the final kick of the game.
