A NOTEABLE scalp was claimed by Falmouth Golf Club on Sunday as they defeat last year’s Cornwall County Golf Union’s President’s Trophy champions Bowood Park, writes Keith Rashleigh.

The team defeat the 2013 winners 5.5 – 3.5 as they clashed in the competition’s quarter final stage at Merlin Golf Course.

It was Bowood’s first ever loss in the trophy, having won on both years since its inception, and Falmouth now have a semi final between either Looe or Lanhydrock on February 15.

Mark Kempthorne got the defending champions off to a flying start as he won the opening match 7&6.

Falmouth hit back with fine wins from Pete Chambers, one up, and Ray Longstaff, 3&2, before Ryan Caturne restored overall parity with a fine 5&4 success.

Steve Edwards then put Bowood ahead with a win by two up.

Mickey Doust was three down with three to play for Falmouth against Paul Menhenick, but showed great character to win the last three holes to obtain a team inspiring half point.

Tristan Gurd and Nick Chinn battled hard to win their respective matches for Falmouth both by 2&1 before young Ben Browning supplied the coup de gras when he defeated former professional Josh Greenaway emphatically by 5&4 to deservedly send his side through.

Meanwhile back at Falmouth there was a large turnout for the Winter League and some great scoring where Ian Renshaw and Larry Lynch combined superbly to win with 46 stableford points with equal nines of 23 each.

Runners up were Martin Lawden and Tony Drew with 45 while third went to Graham Buck and Mark Butland, who also scored 45.

Fourth with yet another 45 were Matt Roberts and Peter Lewis.
