PENRYN Athletic’s joint manager Peter Davey believes their squad this season is the strongest they have had for many years.

Following Saturday’s 4-1 win away at Helston Athletic, the team moved into second place in the South West Peninsula League West table, with only goal difference keeping them off first.

Having beaten the Blues twice this season, Davey feels it has shown the club are ready to progress to the Premier division, but they must keep the good work up.

Davey said: “It is a tight league and we have a side who can put a run on and set a marker for the rest of the sides around us to reach.

“This is the strongest side we have had for a few years.

“We have no big names in the squad but they are all good mates and they are playing a decent brand of football.

“There is still a long way to go, but I don’t think we’ve had a better chance of going up as we do this season for a little while now.”

He went onto say their showing on Saturday against the side who set the early season league pace was a pleasure to watch.

“We’re thrilled with the result,” Davey said.

“At 1-1 the big decision with the penalty and red card went in our favour, but I thought leading up to that we were in control and could have been two or three goals ahead by then.

“We packed the midfield and gave them no time on the ball, which was our main plan and it worked.

“There are five or six teams at the top of the table within a few points of each other and to get six points of one of them is great, but it will mean nothing if we don’t beat Mousehole in our next game.”
