WENDRON United boss Paul Murray believes his side have shown they can compete in the league above them after beating Sticker 5-2 in the Cornwall Senior Cup.

The visitor’s sent their hosts from the South West Peninsula League West crashing out of the competition in the second round with all the goals coming after the half time break.

Justin Miles scored a penalty for Dron before Justin Searle added a brace alongside further strikes from Chris Mulroy and 16-year-old Matt Buchan.

Murray was delighted with the performance and feels the Jolly’s Combination League team have given a clear message to their rivals about their credentials.

“It was a cup game so everyone has to realise that the team from the lower league, which was us on this occasion, will up their game a bit,” he said.

“But what we showed on the pitch was that we are very capable of competing in the league above us, which is where we are aiming to be.

“This win showed how good this group of players is and when they put their minds to it, they can beat anyone.”

A nervy start was made by Dron as Sticker, who currently sit in fourth position in the SWPL West, played a high pressing game.

Their high work-rate made life difficult for the away team, who are second in the Combination League, but they were able to see out proceedings until the break.

The five minutes after the interval, Dron took charge of the game which was seeing the home side beginning to look tired as Miles slotted home a penalty.

It was not entirely straightforward for the visitors though as teenager Lewis Stockley rifled home a shot from the edge of the box to equalise.

His strike was soon bettered though by Searle who smashed home an effort from 30 yards out which left the goalkeeper rooted to the spot.

Mulroy added a third after being put through by Luke Wort and Searle got his second when he stabbed home a shot which squirmed under a defender and dribbled over the line.

United thought they had made it 5-1 when a home defender headed into his own goal from a free kick, only to see the linesman’s flag up in what was a confusing situation as an attacking player cannot be offside if the ball was last touched by a opponent.

Sticker went up the other end of the field and won a free kick which created a chance for Matt Eddy to make it 4-2.

But the final say was had by young substitute Buchan who came onto the pitch and with his first touch headed the ball into the net.

Dron are now just one match away from copying their achievement from last season of reaching the quarter final stage.

Looking ahead to the third round draw, which takes place on Saturday, Murray said he would like to a game at Underlane.

Murray said: “At this stage of the competition, all the teams still involved will be tough to beat, but we are happy to take on anyone.

“If I had a choice I would like to get a home draw to help make the club a bit of money on the day and a bit of publicity too.”
