A WEEK after firing in a hat-trick for the club's reserve team, Rob Wearne was in the goals again on Saturday for Falmouth Town.

His brace helped the Ambers defeat bottom-placed Bovey Tracey 3-0 in the South West Peninsula League Premier tie at Bickland Park.

Sam Bromley also got on the scoresheet for Town towards the end of the match which saw Bovey reduced to ten men after Joe Fath was sent off for a deliberate handball.

With five goals scored in a week, Wearne told the Packet it was a good confidence boost for him.

He said: “Obviously for me it has been a good week for me and the run-out for the reserves was a good chance for me to show what I can offer as I haven't been starting every game for the firsts recently.

“You always enjoy scoring goals otherwise it's pointless being a striker and I was buzzing when I got the hat-trick.

“On Saturday it took us a little while to open the scoring, so that added a bit of pressure on us.

“But our quality shone through in the end and getting three points against any side is good, but especially against a side near us in the table.”

Coming up against the side, who are bottom of the league table, Town knew it was crucial to get a win in order to open up more space between themselves and the relegation zone.

It proved to be a nervy opening before the hosts started to take advantage with Glen Squires and Adam Williams both going close.

The deadlock could not be broken though until two minutes before half time when Wearne had a shot handballed on the line by defender Fath, who was promptly shown a red card, allowing the striker to slot home the resulting penalty.

Wearne doubled the lead after the break when he got on the end of Nick Hurst's cross from the right wing.

Before the second goal, Bovey had come out after the break looking confident despite having just ten men on the field.

But going down 2-0 seemed to burst their bubble and with seven minutes remaining, Bromley added a third when he got on the rebound from Wearne's shot which had been punched away by Tom Brooks.

Assistant manager Gary Pascoe said the win is a good confidence boost for the team.

"This league is becoming a two or three tiered division now," Pascoe said.

"There's the top four or five teams who are running away with things, the middle section and then the bottom part which has us in there, so it is important to beat the teams around you.

"Even though it was against the bottom side, this win will give the guys a lot of encouragement and we'll go into the Christmas games with our heads up."

Town will not be in action again until after Christmas with a trip to Ivybridge Town next up for them on December 27.
