THEY certainly know how to enjoy Christmas at Falmouth Golf Club, writes Keith Rashleigh.

Despite the weather deteriorating in the later stages of the Cut & Carve Two Clubs and A Putter Stableford event, the intrepid golfers toughed it out no doubt thinking about the superb Christmas dinner and hot punch waiting in the bar.

It is doubtful whether the winner Tony Drew, playing off 11 handicap, will ever carry a full set of clubs again as he returned a superb 40 points including 19 on the front nine with a solitary blob at the seventh followed by 21 on the homeward nine which he did in just two over par.

Robbie Edgson also has 11 of his clubs for sale on e-bay as he returned 39 with nines of 22 and 17.

Third was Graham Buck with a tidy 37 following nines of 17 and 20 while Ray Longstaff was fourth with 36, just pipping Simon Kearsley who had respective nines of 20 and 16 on countback.

Steve Thomas and Howard Yeates won nearest the pins on the 12th and 11th holes respectively.

The clubhouse was packed for the afternoon entertainment as Ian “Henry” Churcher orchestrated the proceedings in his own inimitable style as he issued charitable fines to all and sundry for a variety of “serious” misdemeanours including anyone who had carried a bag during the round.

The legendary carols were then sung with the ladies stealing the show with some excellent renditions of popular Christmas songs.

Also during the weekend, Ross Taylor achieved his first hole-in-one with a seven wood at the 151-yard second hole.

It helped the members enjoy Christmas even more as Port was on offer in the bar throughout the day.

Non-members are also made very welcome to sample these delights of the clubhouse over the festive period.
