WHETHER this match was always going to result in a victory for Falmouth was uncertain until the final whistle, writes Lewis Hickson.

The Eagles displayed forward dominance from the get-go.

But this energy unfortunately converted into conceded penalties rather than points on the home team’s score board.

A scrum close to the host’s 22 resulted in a penalty given to Bodmin which Dan Pooley kicked successfully to put an early three point lead.

Falmouth continued to hold the majority of possession, but loose hands and a lack of discipline from both sides meant the pace of the game was slowed down by scrums.

But it was in these set pieces where the Eagles showed their true colours with strength and power.

Nearing the end of the of the first half, Falmouth’s stamina and endurance won them a penalty under Bodmin’s posts.

The team appeared to quickly decide upon taking the line-out and only a few seconds later found themselves brutally mauling through Bodmin’s defences and over the line with Nick Carne, pictured below, getting the final touch.

Falmouth Packet:

The conversion kick was difficult and unfortunately added no points to the Eagles score, making the score at half time 5-3.

After play resumed, the theme of penalties remained a recurring element of the match.

Bodmin made a few good breaks and found themselves pressuring Falmouth’s try-line.

However, the home team defended well through multiple phases of play and finally in the breakdown, the Eagles number 8 Simon Bailey stole the ball to cut the chance off.

Towards the latter stages of the match, Falmouth became less physically contested by the weary visitors.

This gave them space to allow Alex Stuthridge to drop-kick and increase the lead to 8-3.

Their energy persisted through to the final plays of the match where the Eagles repeated the mauling technique which had put them ahead.

Sadly the referee’s whistle blew before the drive could be transformed into points, but Falmouth will be happy to take the points still.
