SUPPORTERS are being urged to help organisers of the County of Origin series reach their £2,000 target by next Sunday in a bid to develop rugby league in Cornwall.

The event will see the Duchy’s team play Devon in a series of three matches with the winners taking home the Martin Roddy MBE Cup.

To help pay for costs including hosting the first game at Redruth on May 24, kit and equipment for the squad, the Cornwall Rugby League Association set up a Crowdfunder account for fans to make pledges.

In return, those who make a donation receive a gift back such as tickets to the game, merchandise and even sponsorship on the team’s shirt.

So far over £600 has been raised, but the target of £2,000 must be reached by March 1, otherwise the cash will go back to the pledgers.

CLRA secretary Rob Butland said: “It is a lot of money, but we just need 2,000 people who are serious about developing Rugby League to throw in £1 each.

“The CLRA has never had that kind of money and with a big year featuring three games against Devon, we thought it would be great to fund the team from the rugby league and Cornish communities.

“These guys are still new to the sport and we want this season to be as enjoyable as possible for them as they are the future of the game in Cornwall.”

Additional campaigns have been launched with the chance to win a replica shirt and tickets to the Challenge Cup Final at Wembley for anyone who pledges £10 or more to the campaign.

Donations can also be made cardless, meaning money will not be taken unless the target is reached.

Shirt sponsorship can be obtained by businesses for three years by pledging £249 or more.
