ORGANISERS of a cycling event which will see riders pedal through Penryn Campus are hoping to turn it into a festival for the sport.

The South West Cycle Sports Show and Urban Downhill 2015 race will be at the venue on April 19 with cyclists tackling obstacles around the site run by Falmouth and Exeter Universities.

Competitions start at 12noon and will see juniors, seniors and veterans taking on the challenge in the contest which is affiliated with British Cycling.

Alongside the high flying moves, there will also be an exhibition put on with bike retailers showing off their gear to punters with the stalls situated right next to the course.

Derek Heelis, Falmouth Cycles owner and a founding member of the event’s host club Carrick Riders, hopes the day will be spectacular and build to something even bigger in the future.

Heelis said: “This will be the third year we have had the race and it is the only event of its type in Cornwall, so we hope it can become a flagship event.

“We have been looking at ways of making it bigger and better and hopefully the addition of the show will help with this as there’ll be plenty of marquees up and retailers of all sizes showing off their stock.

“Our ambition is to eventually turn it into a two day festival of cycling open to the public to enjoy the sport.

“The racing will be very exciting too as the course is great and the campus being on a natural slope really lends itself well for the competition.”
