PENRYN Athletic put a spanner in Vospers Oak Villa’s ambitions to win the South West Peninsula League West title on Saturday.

Goals from Luke Brabyn, Ryan Martt and Scott Palmer saw the visitors end Villa’s eight game unbeaten run in a 3-1 victory at Weston Mill.

While the result saw the hosts drop to third place in the table and scupper their title bid, it also kept alive Athletic’s slim chances of grabbing the league crown.

But even though it is still mathematically possible for them to win the title by a single point, it will be highly unlikely as it would require Athletic to win all four remaining four games and hope other results go in their favour.

Villa started very confidently and in the early exchanges made plenty of sweeping moves towards goal before taking the lead after 16 minutes.

Athletic were making a move down the right flank but lost possession, sparking a counter attacker which saw Lee Card break away.

The home skipper then passed to top goalscorer Lewis Young who shrugged off Rob Dunn in a one-on-one before powering a shot past Chris Symons from ten yards out.

It did not take Athletic long to get a response in though as just six minutes later the scores were level again when makeshift left wing-back Ollie Moody got to the by-line and crossed the ball into the box.

Goalkeeper Ian Evans could only palm his attempted clearance out to Brabyn, who fired a shot through a goalmouth melee and into the net.

Young nearly put Villa back in front before half time but saw his shot hit the upright and after the interval, Athletic took control of the game.

With Villa’s players starting to tire, the visitors took advantage as they raided the home defence and in the 65th minute, Palmer saw his shot on a narrow angle well saved by Evans.

From the resulting corner, Josh Burton wrong footed defenders by stepping over the ball and Martt ran in to smash it home.

Palmer finished proceedings off in the 80th minute as he tucked away a chance created by Kevin Lawrence unselfish cut back to him when he just had Evans to beat after being put through by Ryan Chinn.

Tomorrow night, Athletic take on Sticker in the semi final stage of the Charity Cup at Truro City's Treyew Road ground, with the game kicking off at 7.30pm.
