DENNIS Annear feels Porthleven’s young side have “matured” well over the course of the 2014/15 season.

The Fishermen’s South West Peninsula League West campaign came to a close on Saturday as they defeated Wadebridge Town 2-1, producing their fourth win in six games.

It was Annear’s last match in charge of Port’s dugout as he retires from the role due to work commitments outside of football, with Phil Kellow taking over in the summer.

With the season now over for them, Annear said he was happy with how it ended and the performances they have put in during the year.

“Conditions were difficult on Saturday and the pitch was a bit bumpy to say the least,” he said.

“I think we deserved the win though. Wadebridge will say they were a little short and we had a bit of luck, but it was a good performance from us.

“At the start of the season we had some players who were only 17 and during the season they have got stronger, more physical and are reading the game better, which is great to see.

“In football you never stop learning and they have taken everything onboard and I can tell you this much, picking a winner for most improved player at our awards dinner is going to be a tough choice, because they have all stepped up and matured.”

Saturday’s game was not the most exciting for spectators with chances coming at a premium for both teams.

Josh Hall went close early on for Port when his free kick from the edge of the home penalty area forced a good save from Town’s goalkeeper Ben Hurst.

The Fishermen took the lead in the 13th minute when Tom Annear put through his younger brother Jordan in the box before Martin Cook brought him down with a penalty being awarded.

Annear dusted himself off from the foul and converted the spot kick, sending Hurst the wrong way, taking his league total to 30 goals this season.

Before half time, Annear forced a good save from the Bridgers’ goalkeeper and Chris Wormington’s heroic lunge to clear the ball off the line prevented Luke Hodge from equalising after being presented with an open goal.

After the interval, Benji Bryant got his hands to a well directed Adam Paterson header and Port’s goalie was called into action again when he made another fine stop from Nick Dowling’s effort.

With 20 minutes to go the Fishermen’s lead was extended when Annear doubled his tally for the day when he got on the end of Jamie Greet’s pass before rounding Hurst and slotting home.

The Bridgers were back to just a goal behind a minute later though when Dan Tarrant was judged to have handled the ball in the box, a decision many away players felt was harsh on the centre back, and Hodge scored from the spot.

Port managed to hold out for the win, taking their final points total for the campaign to 35 points.

They currently sit 11th in the table and will finish no lower than 12th depending on how results go on the final weekend.
