As miserable starts to a cricket season go, 2015 must be right up there – ask any Falmouth cricketer.

The soggy Bank Holiday weekend compounded the opening day’s wet weather. Falmouth first team should have completed three Premier 50/50 Cup fixtures by now. They have had two cancellations however and on Monday managed just nine overs at Redruth, before an abandonment.

Having said that they are not without the chance of making the top two in the group, to qualify for the semi-finals. To achieve it they must win their final group game against Camborne at the Hine Downing Oval on Saturday, starting at 1pm, and then hope other results go their way.

Only one of the six games in the West Group has produced a win so far. Falmouth’s home game with Penzance was called off on Saturday morning with water lying on the square. Then on Monday play did get underway at Trewirgie on time, after a dry morning.

Only nine overs were possible as rain set in around 1.30pm. The Reds had got off to a good start reaching 43 without loss. Harry Bolland made 19 not out and Toby Whiteford was unbeaten on 17. Glyn Furnival, 0-17, and Antony Angove, 0-22, were the unsuccessful bowlers.

For the record the rest of the team was returning skipper Sean Hooper, Stefan Churcher, Guy Leathley, George Popperwell, Harry Roberts and debutants Christian Purchase, Callum Whittaker and Jordan Thomas.

Play was called off just after four o’clock. St Just’s game at Camborne was cancelled at Camborne on Saturday. They did get their season started at Penzance on Monday but the game was abandoned with St Just on 27 for two in chase of a target of 149 in 30 overs.

St Gluvias have only had two overs of actionso far this season following Saturday’s cancellation at Hayle. They will hope for better fortunes at Roche on Saturday.

In division two Falmouth seconds visit to Troon was called off as was Stithians home game with Gulval. Falmouth are at St Ives on Saturday and Stithians host Paul.

Constantine did get a game in at newly promoted Goldsithney, in division three. Constantine made 203 all out off the penultimate ball. After losing three wickets for 68 Charlie Campbell, 46, and Graham Griffiths, 65, added 102 for the fourth wicket. Alex Ralph took five for 65.

Constantine needed to get rid of dangerman Giles Lawrence early, but didn’t. He made 79 before Graham Griffiths took the first wicket at 108. He went on to take three for 55 and newcomer from Falmouth, Joe Vanstone, took four for 58. Goldsithney won by three wickets however in the 32nd over. Constantine are on the road again on Saturday, at Leedstown.

Perranarworthal were also in action but might have been glad to see the rain. They were bowled out for just 71 by Mount Ambrose at Tredrea with Simon Blackburn and Gareth Mitchell both taking four wickets, James Adams made 14 and David Angell and Stuart Madeley 13 apiece. The first six wickets fell for only 26 runs. The Mount were unable to commence their innings. On Saturday Botallack & St Levan visit Tredrea.

St Gluvias seconds got half a game in at Kernick against Helston seconds. After Richard Bannister opened with 43 Jack Gleadowe hit 79 off just 33 balls, with seven sixes and six fours. He shared a good partnership with newcomer Ryan Dallimore, who made 45 not out.

After Matthew Crapp took three for 50 ‘Spider’ Kelly, 3-28, took a late hat trick. Sam Duckham then removed Luke Clark for a duck but with the score on 15 the game was abandoned. St Gluvias host St Just thirds on Saturday.

Perranarworthal seconds had Mount Ambrose 128 for four off 33 overs at Treskerby when the rain came. Philip Hingston, Ben Shepherd and Ashley Bridges took a wicket each. Stithians seconds, Falmouth thirds and fourths, Mawnan, St Gluvias thirds and Perranarworthal thirds all had their games cancelled.
