MAWNAN 0 ST DENNIS 0

IT will be left to a replay to decide the victors of this Cornwall Junior Cup final as the Easter Monday match finished in a stalemate at 0-0.

It was a game that lacked the final killer ball and a creative spark that would have made the difference.

With chances at a premium throughout the game, it was really no surprise to see the match finish goalless, although not through a lack of effort from either team.

St Dennis had the better of the few chances in the first half and played the more attractive football, passing it around well as Mawnan looked for the long ball in behind the St Dennis defence.

It was St Dennis who had the first opportunity to break the deadlock after 20 minutes of play. Adrian Noott, the Mawnan 'keeper came out of his area to clear a through ball, but succeeded only in giving the ball to St Dennis winger, Ryan Hayhurst. Some quick control and some even quicker thinking resulted in a decent effort by Hayhurst who saw his snap shot sail just over the bar with Noott left stranded.

Chris Pellow looked bright for Mawnan and nearly got his name on the scoresheet, but he put his shot just over the bar following some good work along the left flank.

A few half chances for either side came and went without really troubling either 'keeper and the sides went in all square at the interval.

As the second half began, Damian Stevens and Gregg Renfree looked lively up front and combined well on a number of occasions to cause the St Dennis backline some problems.

Stevens got into some dangerous positions with the ball but failed to work the opposing 'keeper, shooting high and wide with a frequency that did his all round game no justice.

Renfree had his best chance with ten minutes to go as he sprinted through but was thwarted by a brave challenge from Mike Barrett, the St Dennis 'keeper.

Pellow could have won the game for Mawnan with only five minutes remaining but he poked his shot just wide of the far post after the ball dropped to him in the area, following a free kick.

Despite having the better of the second half and spells of decent pressure, Mawnan didn't do enough to snatch the victory and will have to wait for the replay to try their luck again.

The replay will be tomorrow, Thursday, April 11, again at Priory Park, Bodmin with kick off at 7.30 pm.
