LISKEARD ATHLETIC 0

TRURO CITY 1

TRURO City pocketed their first piece of silverware of an already memorable season after they defeated a resilient Liskeard Atheltic side by a solitary goal in the Cornwall Senior Cup Final played at Bodmin's Priory Park.

Joe Broad's first-half strike was enough to secure the victory but Liskeard gave a good account of themselves against the Wembley-bound team from the county's capital.

City started the match very brightly and set a high tempo right from the off. With Liskeard struggling to cope with the quick passing and clever movement from City, it looked as though the tie could become a very one-sided affair and a goal for City looked inevitable.

The goal came with just under a quarter of an hour on the clock. Joe Broad picked the ball up on the right hand side of the field and made a determined run towards the Athletic area. He slipped the ball to Kevin Wills on the edge of the box who flicked it back into the path of Broad who had continued his run. Broad cut inside a defender before rifling a fierce shot past Simon Zinn to finish a wonderful move by City.

However, after the early setback, Liskeard began to feel their way back into the game. Big striker Lee Harvey was causing City's defence some problems with his physical presence and his willingness to challenge for every ball and after 24 minutes Athletic nearly found a way back into the tie.

After some good work on the flank, the ball was fired into the City box. Harvey latched on to the loose ball and drilled a low shot goalwards only to see it rebound back off the post and subsequently cleared.

Stewart Yetton looked dangerous for City and had a number of chances to extend his side's lead, but could only manage a lob over the bar and a shot wide of the target for his efforts.

Athletic had a weak penalty claim waved away just before half time to leave City leading by the one goal at the break after an entertaining half of football.

City began the second half much the same as the first and could have doubled their lead had Yetton kept himself onside. Yetton did all the hard work after collecting a through ball as he rounded the 'keeper and expertly slotted the ball away, only to find the flag raised against him, much to his dismay.

Broad had a fine game and nearly grabbed himself a second goal ten minutes into the second half. He picked the ball up 25 yards out and hit a sweet crisp strike which, without the 'keeper's excellent intervention, was headed straight for the top corner.

As the game wore on, City began to get sloppy and high, long and aimless balls were being played at every opportunity, a stark contrast to the slick, passing football City were playing in the first half.

However, despite a nervy ending where Liskeard's Kevin Robinson nodded just over from six yards out, Truro City hung on fairly comfortably in the end and were worth their win.

The next final for City will will be held in a slightly more glamorous venue but the celebrations at the final whistle showed just how much domestic success also means to the team.
