CORNWALL beat Devon by 158 runs in the Unicorns Counties Championship at Truro today, writes Michael Weeks.

It’s only the fourth championship win over the old rivals in 35 years, with the last success coming six years ago.

Cornwall declared just before lunch at 324-5 to set Devon 353 to win after Matthew Rowe had hit his maiden county century before being out for 101, Brad Wadlan scored 63 and Falmouth's Christian Purchase was last out for a typically belligerent 68, made off just 36 balls.

Devon were all out for 194 shortly after 5pm as Wadlan took 6 for 72 from 28 overs and Purchase picked up two for 58.

A middle order collapse saw four wickets fall in six overs in mid afternoon and the Devonians were eight down at tea.

Despite a last wicket stand of 30 in ten overs, the end came when Glyn Furnival was brought back into the attack.

On Sunday Cornwall won the toss and elected to bat and made their highest first innings score for four years of 356.

At one stage they were 254-3 with 30 overs remaining, but the innings fell away before Scott Harvey made a useful 40 not out and shared a last wicket stand of 38 with Furnival.

Play was delayed on the second day until 2pm following overnight and morning rain, yet Devon still batted their full 90 overs to reach 328-7, a deficit of 28 on first innings.

Max Curtis made 92 and 17-year-old Ben Green became the youngest ever Devon player to hit a century, whiel Furnival took three for 54.

In their second innings, Cornwall ended the day on 112 without loss with Rowe on 64 and Tom Hughes on 43.

Cornwall’s next game is against Wiltshire at Grampound Road a week on Sunday.
