THERE was plenty of excitement in the Andrew Cup quarter finals with several nailbiting endings - including a winner being decided on losing fewer wickets.

The clash between Helston seconds and St Gluvias seconds at Beacon Parc on Thursday saw both sides score 113, but the hosts went through courtesy of a ruling which gives the team who have used less batsmen to progress.

Helston lost five wickets chasing the Saints' total, which they made with eight batsmen departing the crease during the 20 overs.

Going into the last two overs, the home side still required 20 runs and were able to do so after two dropped catches and a missed stumping chance off the final ball.

Earlier in the innings, Sam Duckham took three wickets for 14 runs but a knock of 42 not out from Mark Thomas helped see Helston home.

He and Luke Clark put on 67 for the fourth wicket before the latter departed for 37 while Colin Kruse top scored in the Saints' innings with 36 not out.

Proceedings were close too at Underlane as Wendron made it to the semis with a one run victory over Mt Ambrose.

Dron posted 152-5 in their 20 overs with Sam Care scoring 46 and his opening partner Antony Harris 45, but the Mount got to with four runs of winning with five wickets remaining.

However, Tim Kitchen picked up two vital wickets in the penultimate over and then in the last, Tom Berryman was run out by Thomas Orchard for 21 before Ryan Mitchell bowled Jonathan Simmons off the final ball.

Perranarworthal were also involved in a close match on Thursday, but they came on the wrong side of a two wicket loss at Penzance.

They made 126-6 in their innings, but a fine knock of 52 from Craig Nicholls featuring six fours and three sixes helped the hosts fight back from 48-5 to victory with a ball to spare.

The other quarter final played a day earlier saw Hayle 2nds beat Camborne 3rds by five wickets.

In the semi finals on July 9, Wendron will play Hayle and Helston face Penzance.
