FINALS were reached by the two teams Eggs 7s sent to Newquay on Saturday for the last ever tournament in Newquay - but both had to settle for runners-up medals.

Sides were entered by the Penryn-based club in the Sailors Open at the Surf 7s, which organisers announced would no longer be running after this year's event.

Dressed in their new kit produced by sponsors Kitworld, the first team were looking to maintain their excellent record in Newquay having made the final on both the previous occasions they have featured there.

Plenty of talent ran through the squad who travelled up including this season's skipper Taron Peacock, Cornwall star and recent Plymouth Albion signing Matt Shepherd and Redruth legend Greg Goodfellow.

A strong challenge was expected by the British Army team who were drawn with Eggs II in the group stage, with their first match coming against the pre-competition favourites.

Straight from the kick-off the Eggs scored a try, which turned out to be the only score against the Army during the day, before a powerful backlash came against them with the servicemen winning 31-7.

Progression to the Plate quarter final was assured though with a good 36-0 victory over Low Fat Milk.

As for the other Eggs side, they topped their group following a 56-0 win over Is It Meat, a 52-0 dismantling of Welsh outfit Wynfawr Warriors and then a hard fought 14-7 success against Team Tom.

In the semis, Eggs I met Akuma Rugby Agents and found themselves trailing at half time 12-7, but edged back into proceedings with an unconverted try before a wonderful solo score from Matt Crosscombe saw them set up a final showdown with the Army.

Eggs II were also doing well and made the Plate final after defeating Bearded Crowds and Is It Meat during the knock-out rounds.

They were up ahead of their colleagues in Eggs I and coming up against them were Team Tom, who had looked good in the group stages.

With fatigue setting in, four tries were bagged by their opponents in the first half which gave the Eggs a mountain to climb and despite scores from Penryn's Andrew Seviour and Lanner's Levi Webster, Team Tom won 31-14.

In the main final, crowds gathered to watch the Army clash with Eggs I in an epic battling with big hits going in early on.

Despite looking in the ascendancy, a spillage from the Eggs led to the Army opening the score and from there the game went away from the Cornishmen, eventually losing 24-0.

On Saturday, Eggs will make the trip to Somerset where they will participate in the Frome 7s.
