WOMEN'S football development has been given a boost in Cornwall after the county's FA established a new league competition to start next season.

During a meeting held last week involving teams from across the Duchy, a decision was made to form the Cornwall FA Girls Football League with divisions in the Under 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18s age categories.

Previous clubs had played in the Kernow League to get game time, but inspired by the success of England team at the Women's World Cup, where they finished third, it was felt to continue the sport's growth in the county, a new competition was needed.

Cornwall FA's women's, girls and disability football development officer Warren Parker said the league will be brilliant tool to increase player numbers.

Parker said: "This is a really exciting time for girls to get involved in football locally and with the England Women’s Team having enjoyed so much success at the World Cup and the We Can Play campaign, now is the time to get involved.

"The new Girls League looks forward to working closely with the Cornwall Women's League to make sure that all Initiatives and ideas can be shared to try to make the offer of female football in Cornwall a very attractive one."
