CHANGES will be made to the Eggs 7s rugby team's set-up next year after finishing their season off in Frome on Saturday.

The side were forced into eight changes to their 12 man squad for the tournament in Somerset from the previous weekend's exploits at the Newquay 7s, where they were runners-up.

They eventually made their way to the Plate semi final stage before being beaten 22-12 by the West Country Cavaliers.

During the build-up to the competition, a number of last minute changes were forced upon the squad as playing and coaching personnel dropped out.

With their summer over and with the Penryn Easter 7s as their sole victory, team manager Richard Jackson said changes will be made to how the club will be run from 2016 onwards.

Jackson said: "After the high of the Open Final at Newquay, we came down to earth with a massive bump this week and the age-long issue of retaining the same group of players from tournament to tournament reared its head again.

"As a team we have decided to change direction, so there is to be a change of structure within the team from 2016 onwards, including a new management team and a focus on developing feeder clubs in Devon.

"The Eggs have found it a challenge to recruit Cornish-based players on a consistent basis, and therefore to secure our future we need to identify and develop young sevens talent from clubs who have consistently provided us with keen 7s players who appreciate the opportunity to play 7s at a high level."

He also hinted he will step aside from his managerial role after 15 years of being in charge of the Eggs.

"I will take a back seat next year and the team will be managed more hands-on by younger guys like Jamie Shone and Taron Peacock, in order to secure the future of the team," Jackson said.

"It is a young man’s game and I need to put some succession planning in place, allowing me to enjoy the Eggs progress without having a hands-on role as I have for the last 15 years."

On Saturday, the day started off well for the Eggs as they beat Zoti Guns 29-5 before losing by the same score against Shredded Ducks.

A 36-12 victory in their last pool game over Fijian outfit Pursuit Warriors saw them reach the Open quarter final stage where they beat Oxfam Crusaders 17-5.

Injuries were taking their toll and meant the Eggs had just one substitute for their clash against West Country Cavaliers and fatigue got the better of them.

The new set-up will be announced in January, along with the tournaments they will participate in next year.
