GREY clouds and a force two-three westerly greeted the crews at Royal Cornwall Yacht Club on Tuesday evening, writes Harold Martin.
A course was set heading off towards Trefusis from the start and in Q Class, Jackdaw arrived to the point first and bore away at full speed to get 150m away from the chasing pack.
In U Class, Gap Year took an early lead as the boats bunched up, but the spinnaker powered group changed places on the long run to Carricknath.
Heavy traffic built up around Black Rock as the first crews had to beat back through U Class.
Macavity looked to have nailed their start, but agonisingly lost their wind and stopped completely just a couple of boat lengths from the line.
Jackdaw's powerful opening section of the race gave them a eight minute lead which left the others for dead as they romped to victory.
